How to Improve Your Tennis Forehand: Technique, Timing and Practice Drills

A powerful tennis forehand rarely comes from swinging harder. The biggest gains usually appear when a player reaches the ball early, creates space from the body and meets it in front with a stable racket face. Once those pieces are reliable, pace and spin become much easier to produce.
Improving your forehand means working on several connected skills: grip, preparation, footwork, contact height, follow-through and recovery. A good stroke is not one isolated movement but a sequence that begins before the ball reaches your side of the court.
Build a more reliable forehand technique
Start with a grip that allows both control and topspin. Many players use a semi-western grip because it supports a high contact point and makes it easier to brush up the back of the ball. A continental grip is generally better suited to serves and volleys, while an excessively eastern grip can make heavy topspin more difficult on high balls. Choose a grip that feels repeatable rather than changing it during every swing.
As your opponent hits, turn your shoulders and racket together instead of taking the racket back with only your arm. The non-hitting hand can help guide the racket during the unit turn, keeping the preparation compact. Your racket should be ready before the ball bounces on your side whenever possible.
Footwork determines how much freedom your swing has. Use small adjustment steps as the ball approaches, then create space so your hitting arm is not trapped against your hip. For a standard forehand, contact is usually slightly in front of the front hip and around waist to chest height. If the ball is too close, even a technically sound swing will feel cramped.
Drive from the ground by allowing the legs and hips to begin the forward movement. The shoulders and arm then follow, with the racket accelerating through contact. Avoid forcing the wrist to manufacture topspin. A relaxed arm, a stable contact point and a racket path that rises through the ball are more dependable sources of spin.
After contact, let the racket finish naturally across the opposite side of the body or higher over the shoulder, depending on the ball height and intended trajectory. The follow-through is not the main source of power, but it helps reveal whether the swing was balanced. Finish ready to recover rather than watching the shot.
Practice drills that improve forehand consistency
Begin with cooperative cross-court hitting. Aim several feet inside the sideline and focus on reaching the same contact zone on every ball. The target is not maximum speed; it is a repeatable ball that clears the net safely and lands deep. Count consecutive shots in the court, then gradually increase pace without sacrificing control.
Shadow swings are useful when they have a clear purpose. Without a ball, rehearse the unit turn, split-step, adjustment steps, contact position and recovery. Perform the movement slowly first, then at normal speed. This helps separate footwork problems from timing problems before adding the pressure of a live rally.
For a simple forehand timing drill, have a partner feed balls at a comfortable pace while you call “bounce” and “hit” quietly or aloud. This encourages an early preparation and discourages late, rushed swings. If you are consistently late, shorten the backswing and begin the shoulder turn sooner rather than trying to swing faster.
To develop topspin, use a basket drill in which you hit moderate-speed balls with a clear net margin. Brush upward through the ball while keeping the forward direction of the swing. A ball that rises safely over the net and drops deep is more useful than a dramatic shot that lands short or misses wide.
Practice different court positions as your control improves. Hit one forehand from the baseline, recover to the center, then move to another feed. Add high balls, low balls and balls that pull you wide. This trains the open-stance and neutral-stance forehand under realistic movement rather than only from a comfortable stationary position.
Fix common forehand problems
If the ball repeatedly flies long, check the racket face and contact point before reducing your swing. An open face or contact that is too far behind the body often sends the ball upward. Aim with more topspin, make contact farther in front and finish balanced over the front side.
Shots that land in the net commonly come from late preparation, a cramped swing or insufficient racket-head speed. Move your feet earlier and allow the racket to travel forward as well as upward. Keeping too much tension in the forearm can also restrict the swing and reduce both depth and spin.
When forehands lack power, avoid immediately adding more arm effort. Look at the sequence: split step, shoulder turn, spacing, leg drive, rotation and relaxed acceleration. A player who reaches the ball early and uses the body efficiently can hit harder with less visible strain.
For greater match reliability, choose a dependable rally target. Cross-court forehands provide more room over the net and a longer diagonal court, making them a sound default pattern. Change direction only when your balance, contact point and court position support the decision.
A practical weekly forehand routine
Use one session for technique, beginning with shadow swings and slow feeds. Dedicate another session to cross-court consistency and topspin, then finish with points where you deliberately build rallies around the forehand. Keep notes on the type of miss, such as late contact, poor spacing or an open racket face, rather than recording only whether the shot went in.
Short, focused practice is usually more productive than repeatedly hitting tired forehands without a target. End a drill when your technique starts breaking down, reset your feet and resume at a manageable pace. Over time, the goal is a forehand that remains balanced and predictable even when the ball arrives at different speeds, heights and angles.
