Statisticians generally record an unforced error when a player misses a shot that could reasonably have been returned successfully under the circumstances. A routine groundstroke from near the baseline is a typical example. If the incoming ball is comfortable and the player has time to prepare, a shot that lands beyond the baseline may be classified as an unforced error. For example, a player may hit a forehand into the net after being pulled far outside the singles court. That miss is more likely to be recorded as a forced error because the opponent’s shot created the difficult position. If the player hits the same forehand into the net while standing inside the baseline with time to prepare, it is more likely to be classified as unforced.
The boundary is not always perfectly clear. A deep, high-bouncing shot may leave a player uncomfortable without producing an obvious winner. Different tournaments, data providers and commentators may classify borderline mistakes differently. For that reason, unforced-error figures should be treated as useful match data rather than an entirely objective measurement.
